The Philadelphia Flyers made a total of six selections in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, all of which were taken in the third round and beyond. As is the case with many player that go in the later rounds, there really isn’t a ton of information on such players, but with the help of the internet and draft reports, we can reasonably make a grade for each player and the Flyers overall draft results. The Toronto Maple Leafs have selected highly-touted centre Greg McKegg with their third round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. McKegg, who stands 6’0 and weighs in at 185 pounds, brings a ton of speed to the Leafs lineup and is very versatile as he is able to play both centre and wing. The native of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, is known as a goal scorer who uses his speed to avoid defenders. He is a very crisp/quick skater with a tremendous first stride and a decent hockey IQ. Through 67 games, McKegg scored 37 goals and added 48 assists for a total of 85 points with the OHL’s Erie Otters. As expected, the Edmonton Oilers used the number one pick to select Taylor Hall , while the Boston Bruins selected Tyler Seguin with the second overall pick. Hall, who won back-to-back Memorial Cups and Memorial Cup MVP’s, gives the Oilers a very talented, offensive-minded forward who should bring a certain amount of respect back to the floundering Oilers franchise. In Seguin, the Bruins get a player that won the OHL scoring title and is the more well rounded of the two top picks. Given Seguin’s skill-set the Bruins feel as if he is ready to step into their everyday lineup as a top six forward. No question, both teams got great players and, while I suspect Hall will be a tremendous NHL scorer, I suspect Seguin will emerge as the better, more well-rounded player. Adios Mr. Blake! The NHL lost another one of it’s greatest players last week when perennial all-star defenseman Rob Blake (who was playiong for the San Jose Sharks) announced his retirement. Blake, who posted 777 career points, including 240 goals, will be eligible for the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013—It says here he should be a first-time ballet entry. Blake had an amazing career, complete with a Norris Trophy Award in 1997-98, a Stanley Cup win with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001 and an Olympic gold medal in 2002 as a member of Team Canada.
