Jonathan Bernier: What’s The Asking Price?

July 18th, 2012 2 Comments

When news hit the airwaves yesterday that Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke had made an offer to the Los Angeles Kings for 23-year old goaltender Jonathan Bernier there was no indication of which player/s or draft pick/s Burke had offered in return. Today sources say that Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi has identified a specific roster player and a draft pick that he would be willing to accept in return for Bernier. As it stands right now, the Kings have a total of 24 players under contract for the upcoming 2012-13 season at a cap hit of $62,320,227. If we assume a salary cap of $70,200,000 that leaves the Kings with just under $8 million with which to make improvements to their roster. That said, with the Kings’ willing and able to ice the majority of

Jonathan Bernier: Soon To Be Maple Leaf?

July 17th, 2012 14 Comments

Last week we speculated that Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke would be smart to go after 23-year old goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who had just asked to be traded out of the Los Angeles Kings organization. Since then the Columbus Dispatch has said that the Blue Jackets were interested in acquiring Bernier and now Hockey Night In Canada’s Andi Petrillo has announced via Twitter that the Maple Leafs have made an offer for Bernier. While no details of the potential deal have been released there are bound to be a number of scenarios being rumored shortly. From the outside looking in it would appear as if Los Angeles may covet one of the Maple Leafs young defensive prospects, or perhaps they would be willing to take a flyer on Nazem Kadri, whose name always seem to pop up in

Roberto Luongo Or Bobby Ryan: Which Player Helps Toronto More?

July 15th, 2012 9 Comments

Seemingly unable to lure a star free agent to Toronto this summer, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke still appears to be looking to add a player of significance. The Maple Leafs always seem to be mentioned when a player is on the trading block, which can sometimes make fans scoff at any trade news, but both Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks continue to get a ton of print in the local rags, suggesting that there may be some validity to the trade talks this time around. Originally thought to be willing to trade Luongo on the cheap, it now appears as if  Canucks general manager Mike Gillis is playing hard ball with rival NHL general managers in an attempt to maximize his return on what he feels (despite a contract

2013 NHL Free Agency: Which Players Should Burke Target?

July 13th, 2012 No Comments

With the 2012 class of free agents slowly starting to sign with their new clubs, it appears as if Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke will stick to his words and avoid making a big acquisition via free agency this summer. According to the Maple Leafs currently have $58,353,333 invested in 19 players for the 2012-13 season, leaving them with just under $12 million to spend based on a $70,200,000 Salary Cap. While it is fairly clear that any cap room Burke has will likely be spent on acquiring a player with a large contract via trade, next summer becomes very interesting in Leafland as Burke will have just 11 players under contract at a cost of $38,103,333. That will leave Burke with just over $32 million with which to fill out his roster. With key players like

Jonathan Bernier Asks For Trade. Is Brian Burke Interested?

July 12th, 2012 2 Comments

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the future of Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo who has asked to be traded out of Vancouver. Now, it appears as if Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier has asked for a trade, as per NHL writer Andy Strickland of True Hockey. Strickland made the announcement via his Twitter account stating: “Next move the ‪#LAKINGS will be to trade Jonathan Bernier who has asked to be moved. ‪#devils ‪#Leafs ‪#blackhawks all possibilties” The Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks have long been rumored to be interested in Louongo, so it is not a big stretch to imagine these teams making an effort to trade for Bernier. In Louongo, teams are getting a proven veteran who, while historically shaky in the playoffs, is a legitimate all-star goaltender during the regular season. He

Is James van Riemsdyk A Good Fit At Centre?

July 11th, 2012 No Comments

With news hitting the airwaves today that James van Riemsdyk is willing to abandon the wing for a shot at centering Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul (two players JVR is familiar with from his time with Team USA and the Philadelphia Flyers) next season, the search for a number one centre might end sooner than the Toronto Maple Leafs expected. Acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers in return for defenseman Luke Schenn, JVR hasn’t played centre since he manned the middle with the University of New Hampshire, but with Toronto in desperate need for a centre and JVR seemingly willing to give it a shot, it appears as if Maple Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle will give him a shot at training camp. “It’s (playing centre) something that would be a good opportunity for me I think,” said JVR in a
