Benjamin Conz Will Be Drafted This Time Around

At 5’11 and 194 pounds, Switzerland’s Benjamin Conz is a little on the small side when compared to most of the goalies getting drafted these days. Conz, who went undrafted at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft last summer, played very well for Switzerland at last years World Junior Championship where he posted a 4.76 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. On the surface those numbers look ridiculously bloated, but when you consider Conz is playing for Switzerland (a team that often gives up 40 shots or more per game) his accomplishments come into focus. Conz backstopped the Swiss to an impressive 3-2 victory over the Russians last year, stopping 50 of 52 shots in the process, helping Conz to be named to the 2010 World Junior all-star team as the tournaments best goaltender. Team Canada Will Find It’s Way

With the preliminary rounds behind them Team Canada finished with a 3-0-1 record, with their overtime loss coming at the hands of Sweden. Canada has been hampered by a number of injuries (including forward Calvin De Hann, Cody Eakin and Jaden Schwartz—who will not be back), the questionable suspension of power forward Zach Kassian and some truly spotty goaltending from Olivier Roy—who has been guilty of going down into the butterfly position far too early, leading to a number of short side high goals from the opposition. With all this in mind, as much adversity as Team Canada has had to endure, they are still 3-0-1, in position to compete for a medal game and have played some inspired hockey along the way. Even after the loss to the Swedes, there does not seem to be a sense of panic
